Yesterday, I was confirmed by the Senate to fill a vacancy that was left by incoming Secretary Colin Meiselman. The debate and vote over the confirmation of my appointment took place with me out of the room. I am told that the final vote was 11-7, with 4 Senators abstaining. By far, this was the closest of any of the confirmations that took place. Apparently, there was concern about a letter that I had written, that was published on the Editorial Page of The Eagle, that criticized the Chair of the Board of Elections. I find it disappointing that some Senators chose to make such an issue out of this behind my back, yet refused to raise the issue when they had an opportunity to question me. I would encourage the Senate to allow individuals to speak for themselves on issues like this in the future, rather than talking them down when they are out of the room.
In any event, I am now officially a member of the Fourth Undergraduate Senate. The Senate is in recess until the next academic year, and I look forward to keeping you up to date as soon as that begins. Have a great summer!
