Today's Eagle featured an editorial encouraging students to vote down the referendum that would make the Comptroller and Secretary appointed. Now, I agree with their position, as I believe that the Comptroller and Secretary should continue to be elected. However, I cannot ignore the misinformation provided in this piece. One of the key arguments is that the President would have too much power if he were allowed to appoint these other executives. Had whoever wrote this piece paid any attention at all to the Undergraduate Senate meeting yesterday, they would have known that the amendment would not specify who would be appointing the executives, as that would be determined later. Again, not the best system. But this newspaper, that inexplicably has a monopoly on opinion at this university, got the facts wrong.
Perhaps if The Eagle sent a reporter to cover the majority of the Senate meetings that take place every week, they would have a better idea of what is actually going on. Maybe they would see more of the good that is done in the SG, rather than simply criticizing it all of the time. I sound like way more of an insider than I really am. I am simply sick and tired of this sorry excuse for a publication ignoring the SG entirely, unless they have a chance to abstractly criticize it.
Of course, during the impeachment proceedings, The Eagle was there in full force. There were special reports, live streaming video, and constant Twitter updates. They have the ability to cover the SG. They simply choose to do so only when issues of conflict arise, and they completely ignore any substantive issues that have an impact on the lives of students. Example: the five cent bag fee that was extensively debated yesterday.
It pains me to say it, but the best thing that ever happened to student representation at AU was for the majority of candidates endorsed by the paper in last fall's election to have lost. The fewer opinions that are shaped by the editorial page of The Eagle, the better.
