It is something that I've aspired to do after serving and working closely with former President Seth Cutter. I began seriously considering the run for President after being able to step into a smaller, more insulated role in the SG, this year, as well as work in my major on-campus role - Vice President of Advocacy and Community Coordination for the Residence Hall Association.I found that the Student Government is filled with political infighting, internal bickering, and inefficiency that reflects poorly on the organization and creates a divide between the SG and the student body. The fallout from the postponement of the Founder's Day Ball shows that students care nothing about the petty politicking that goes on; rather, they care about the elected and appointed officials delivering on what they said that they were going to do - providing advocacy, programming and services to the student body.
Other candidates are encouraged to email me with their thoughts about why they are running, and I will be more than happy to post them.
Nirvana Habash and Seth Rosenstein are also considering running, although neither has made an official decision known to the public. Current President Andy MacCracken is also rumored to be considering running for another term. (If there are any other potential candidates out there, please email me: michael.mayer[at]american.edu)
Mr. Dunham was the Speaker for much of the Fourth Undergraduate Senate, and he was often mentioned in this blog. There appears to be an interesting field of candidates lining up. While it is hard to tell at this point who the frontrunner is, I am certain about one thing: Dunham will be the most well dressed candidate in the field. The man knows his fashion.

Rosenstein all the way. He may not have made it official yet, but he is definitely running. And he will win.
ReplyDeletemaccracken??????????
ReplyDeleteI hope Andy runs again.
ReplyDeleteAndy MacCracken has been a totally ineffective President
ReplyDeleteRosenstein is the only one in this field not tainted by the SG. I hope he commits to the race and wins.
ReplyDeleteDoes Mr. Dunham realize he has no significant electoral base to elect him?
ReplyDeleteSeth and Anthony are interesting candidates but I'm not sure about Nirvana and Andy. Seth seems determined and has the right ideas. The support I've seen and heard for him is pretty remarkable. Anthony has decent ideas but will always be plagued by giving off the impression that he is better than everyone else.
ReplyDeleteI don't see Nirvana tackling the issues and being effective. She'd be an interesting exec other than President, but I just don't see it. As for Andy, his time has come and gone. He hasn't been an effective President and he should walk away gracefully.
It's rather hard to address people when they're all anonymous...
ReplyDeleteI realize it is going to be a hard race, and I hope to have fun while doing it. No significant electoral base? Perhaps and perhaps not. However, what better way to get to know someone you've never really met, right? If I don't win the election, I can say that I've become even more familiar with my peers.
I do sincerely hope that I can dispel the misconception that I give off the aura that I'm better than others. I would rather lose and keep my humility than win under terrible delusions of grandeur. I've always been taught to "never think thyself more highly than thou ought," and I hope to live up to that life lesson, regardless of the outcome of the election.
