There are some interesting bills that are being introduced today. Technically they will only be up for first reading (meaning that they will simply be referred to committee, not debated), but the Senate has the ability to waive first reading if it so chooses. One of the bills up for first reading is a bill to expand access to Zipcar for students over age 18 (currently you have to be 21). Many other campuses have a deal with Zipcar in which the university covers the cost of the extra liability, and Zipcar changes its policy to allow all students over the age of 18 access to their services. There is also a bill to lower the cost of parking on campus. Other than that, everything else is pretty much internal SG stuff. But at least these two bills directly address the daily life of American University students. I can tell you now that I am excited about the Zipcar bill, but have serious questions about the parking bill. But, if they end up being debated today, I will keep an open mind.
The meeting begins at 2:30 today. Check back throughout the day as I will be, as always, updating throughout the meeting.
